Working as writer and content developer also means being a strategist. All of the regular day to day gallery operations demand some form of writing – emails, press releases, website content, editorial work. These are a pleasure to write but the fun comes in when some creative work is in order – for instance coming up with a theme and title for an exhibition.
Those challenge the brain by requiring the crafting of a title that succinctly describes what the exhibition is about and leads how the Call for Entry is written. The Call for Entry in turn needs to be intriguing to the artist and give them some parameters for interpretation.
But best of all, though, is when the lightbulb comes on to resolve an issue where none seemingly existed, or to come up with an idea to make something better. Our platform for the virtual gallery requires the viewer to mouse through the gallery to see the work. It is what it is, but I find that I always seem to be crashing into walls or can’t get to just right spot I need to be.
It came to me that the answer could be a guided tour, like the audio tours in museums. This gives added value because with a narrator and guide, the viewer doesn’t have to wangle with the mouse or mousepad, can sit back and be led through the gallery plus learn a little more about each artist and their work as told by the narrator to give it context and meaning.
Each member of the team is capable of being the narrator, but as I thought about it, there would be an opportunity for cross promotion by using a professional – and then I thought of Tamara Shavon! What made it even better was that being a professional with experience in the recording industry, Tamara was able to give us the recordings in a format that made it simple to integrate with the video tour. It was a win-win.
Being a writer means to be a communicator, to get information across in the easiest, most meaningful direct way, and it’s always a thrill when you can solve a problem at the same time.
