I just finished up a writing assignment working with hip hop artist Tamara Shavon, who found me through a hashtag. One of the things I enjoy most about writing for clients is that I get to meet interesting people.
Creative and enterprising since childhood, Tamara embodies her messages of positivity and hope through leading by example. Working a string of jobs growing up, she pursued a career in the performance arts, taking every opportunity to hone her craft, at the same time developed an ad-hoc initiative to educate people about the importance of nutrition, even shopping and cooking for them in the process.
Now, Tamara has carved out an unusual niche for herself in the Hip Hop Industry – a veritable lone ranger fighting against the notions of destruction and hopelessness as themes in a genre that glorifies violence and exploitation of women.
Determined to break the glass ceiling in a segment of the industry which has never been hospitable to woman, Tamara’s message to young women is that it’s ok to be themselves – despite body type or social media status – and that they deserve the right to exist exactly how they are at any given point in time.
In that vein, with her company Merlot Heart, an LLC, she mentors young artists in music production and direction, writing and getting published, engineering and studio mixing.
Directly in line with her theme of unity, she educates young people on how the business works and at the same time providing a support system for creatives.
