I read a productivity study a few years back that said that the optimal brain time for most people is 8:30 a.m., which unfortunately is also the same time that most people are commuting.
Not everybody is a morning person, nor is everyone a commuter, but the important takeaway here is to determining what times work best for you to get certain tasks done. Especially the ones you dread doing. Several years ago I did an oil painting mentorship with artist Abbey Ryan. She asked what time of day was my most productive for painting. Being a morning person, I immediately answered: morning.
On further reflection and observation of reality I discovered that my brain works in different ways at different parts of the day. Actually I paint much better in the afternoon – starting anywhere from 2 to 4:00. However, my optimal time for writing is in the morning. In a pinch I can do either , as I am right now – but by using my brain for things it does best at certain times it helps create a natural rhythm for my day in which everything can fall in place more naturally.
If you’re working on a writing project and are having trouble getting down to it, experiment with the times of day you are using for this task. This article might help you see where you fit in.
