The single most easy way to improve your art writing is the single most easy way to improve any writing. You’ll find this advice on any writing website but it bears repeating, especially here because somehow the specter of art-centric writing looms large in the minds of those who need to do it.
Be direct. Use the active voice.
Subject, verb, object.
John Smith’s work appears in collections around the world
instead of: The work of John Smith is collected by people around the world.
Use plain language.
I use my brush to apply broad strokes on the canvas.
instead of:
I utilize creative brushwork to create a colorful wonderland on my canvas.
Use adjectives and adverbs sparingly.
Again, I use my brush to apply broad strokes on the canvas.
This one’s tricky. You have to use descriptors for your art. When you’ve completed your draft see what sentences sound stronger without them.
When you use descriptors make them specific. Use them to help the viewer see your art through your eyes.
