I believe in being direct and to the point. Direct and concise writing can get your message across and convey who you are at the same time. But I also love the power of spontaneity and not feeling like you have to make everything perfect all the time. That’s where video comes in.
I love video.
The difference between video and writing is that video is actually a lot more forgiving. You can be yourself, make a few mistakes and laugh them off. Right. On. Screen. People want to know you, or get a feel for who you are at least. For that reason, it’s an instance where I don’t think you need to have everything perfectly scripted and rehearsed.
Of course, you should have a focus and some key bullet points you want to address. Like writing, your message still needs to be clear and not wander too far off point. Videos are an excellent way to welcome people to your website or to describe a work or work in progress via Facebook or Instagram Live.
Videos are different from formal presentations, which should be well organized and so well rehearsed that you can deliver them in your sleep, allow for slight deviations that aren’t going to dilute your message, and show your personality. Have you ever seen an unprepared speaker? It’s painful to watch and yet the disaster could have been so easily prevented.
