I love to work with artists because I meet so many interesting people whose work runs the gamut from gilding to realism to figurative abstraction. They are painters, metal workers, sculptors and crafters.
Usually they have a good idea of who they are and what they want to say, but they all want different things in terms of presentation. A lot of times all they need is a really good editor, who can reorganize, get rid of the extraneous and occasionally make a small leap for them so that their message is clearly understood and professional.
Some tips – go through your document and cut everything that isn’t absolutely necessary. This includes conversational lead-ins to sentences, for example: “I’d like to” or “In conclusion”. Your written presentation is not a conversation, it’s a tool to get your point across quickly and clearly. Watch your adverbs and adjectives. Some you need to describe your work, others you don’t. You will find with cutting the fluff your piece is much stronger. Without the clutter of unnccesary words you essentially allow yourself to shine through. Does it feel too short now? Then take advantage of the extra space to dig deeper.
If you are unsure of the strength of your writing dossier, please do call. I’ll tell you if I think it’s already stellar. Promise!
